Peru Path invites you to take a step back in time and explore our city alongside our expert staff and learn of the fascinating legends, history, and landscapes. On our day tour, you will get to discover the Authentic Inca Empire and as you venture through the beautiful land of Peru.
Head off the beaten path to two unique sites located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, the salt mines of Maras and Moray. Both places embody very special landscape and are considered unique places for those people that have a passion for photography.
We will begin by driving for around 1 hour to Moray, which is the oldest Inca archaeological site in the world, known for its horticultural experimental center, a true example of Incan ingenuity. Each terraced level has a different micro-climate in which various crops can be grown. It is also known as the ‘natural greenhouse’.
Each circular terrace descends to 500 feet (150 meters) and the temperature difference between the upper and lower terraces is up to 60°F (15°C). For those who are up for a small hike, you can walk down to the lowest level to get a true sense of the magnitude of the site – just be prepared for the hike back up to the van!
Later, we drive to Maras salt mines, this is located about 4.5 km from Moray. Each terraced pond or parcel is polygonal in shape; salty water emerges from an underground spring, flows into the ponds, and evaporates with the sun. The site is quite spectacular with pools lining the mountains.
It’s very impressive to know that the salt mines are still active today and maintained cooperatively by the Maras community. The white salt ponds contrast with the surrounding green hills and mountains, the views of the Sacred Valley from here are breathtaking.
We start our tour by picking you up from your hotel in Cusco and the entire trip lasts around 6 to 7 hours. You will return to your hotel by early afternoon.
